What are Altmetrics?

Altmetrics refer to the variety of alternative ways to measure the impact, spread, and influence of information online. Particularly when applied to scholarly publications, they are used as an additional source of data about the influence of publications that, because they include measures of social media activity and other fast-appearing mentions of publications can show up faster than traditional scientometric or bibliometric measures.
